Abhyanga is an ancient cultural healing practice in Ayurveda. It is a Snehana Karma (oleation process), which literally means to impart love by touch using Ayurveda oils. This process of Abhyanga (oil massage) is a complete treatment for mind, senses and body treatment. Physically, it soothes, heals and regenerates the body. Abhyanga relaxes the muscles, nourishes the skin, and relieves pain and fatigue. It helps to improve digestion, circulation, the endocrine, lymphatic and nervous systems.
Abhyanga also focuses on emotional and psychological well-being. We store emotions and stress in our bodies. Abhyanga serves to release this tension. Touch in itself is a subtle, yet powerful healing agent.
Abhyanga is specific to the individual and their condition. Each Abhyanga is tailored according to individual’s need to enhance the therapeutic potential. Depending on constitution and the state of health of the individual, different herbs and techniques are used. Herbal pastes, dried herbs, salt, mud, rice, herbs poultices and silk, or herb fibers may also be used.
