Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy)

Description

Raktamokshana is one of the five main detoxification therapies (Pancha Sodhana) in Ayurveda, aimed at removing vitiated or impure blood from the body. This therapeutic procedure helps relieve conditions caused by excess Pitta and Rakta such as inflammation, skin diseases, swelling, and chronic pain. It is performed using various methods, including leech therapy, venesection, or cupping, depending on the individual's condition. Raktamokshana purifies the blood, reduces toxins, and promotes healthy circulation and tissue healing. We practice leech therapy (Jalaukavacharana) in our centre for bloodletting.

Leech Therapy (Jalaukavacharana)

Leech Therapy, or Jalaukavacharana, is a specialized method of Raktamokshana — the Ayurvedic practice of therapeutic bloodletting. This technique uses medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) to gently extract impure blood from localized areas of the body. It is particularly effective for conditions caused by vitiated Pitta and Rakta (blood), which manifest as inflammation, swelling, burning, discoloration, and chronic pain.

Leeches naturally release biologically active enzymes and anticoagulants during the therapy, such as hirudin, calin, and destabilase, which help in reducing pain, inflammation, and promoting circulation and healing. This therapy has been practiced for thousands of years and is now recognized for its efficacy in both traditional and integrative medical settings.
