Shirovirechana (Head Detoxification Therapy)

Cleanses and revitalizes the head region through combined Nasya and Dhumapana therapies

Description

Shirovirechana is a classical Ayurvedic detoxification therapy aimed at eliminating accumulated toxins (Ama) and balancing the doshas in the head, neck, and upper respiratory tract. This integrated treatment involves two primary procedures: Nasya (nasal administration of medicated substances) and Dhumapana (inhalation of medicated herbal smoke).

The therapy begins with gentle facial Abhyanga (massage) and Swedana (steam) to open the channels (Srotas), followed by the administration of medicated oil, ghee, herbal powder snuff, or herbal decoctions into the nostrils (Nasya). This helps expel excess Kapha, mucus, and toxins lodged in the sinuses and head region.

Following Nasya, Dhumapana is administered — an inhalation of herbal smoke prepared from specific detoxifying and rejuvenating herbs. This process further cleanses the respiratory tract, sinuses, and mind while pacifying Vata and Kapha doshas. The combined action of Nasya and Dhumapana supports a wide range of head and sense organ disorders and improves overall mental and respiratory clarity.
