Matra Basti (Oil Enema Therapy)

Gentle rejuvenation and nourishment through the colon

Description

Matra Basti is a gentle and nourishing form of Basti therapy (medicated enema), primarily used to balance Vata dosha, the governing force of movement, dryness, and nervous system regulation in the body. It involves the administration of a small quantity (approximately 70–75 ml) of specially prepared herbal oil or a combination of various lipids into the rectum, where it is retained for several hours — typically 6 to 8 hours — to allow deep absorption and systemic action.

Unlike strong cleansing bastis, Matra Basti is non-purging and can be administered daily over several days without causing irritation or depletion. It is highly beneficial for individuals with dryness, weakness, irregular bowel movements, or nervous system disorders. The oils used are rich in nourishing and calming properties, restoring intestinal flora and strengthening the colon, which is considered the root of Vata regulation.
